Leo A. Landers

Leo A. Landers, age 96, of Amelia Island FL, passed away on September 30, 2024. Leo was born on September 25, 1928 in Cambridge MA, the second of five sons to David and Helen (Curry) Landers of Antrim St. He attended St. Mary’s grammar school and Boston College High. He received the Archbishop Cushing Scholarship to Boston College and graduated magna cum laude in 1949 with a B.S. in Chemistry. This was followed by a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from M.I.T. in 1953. Leo then began a 40-year career in chemical/plastics research, research management, and general management with American Cyanamid and affiliates. At retirement in 1990, he held the positions of Director of R&D for Formica Corporation and general manager of one of its subsidiaries.
Leo loved family most of all. He met and married Catherine Crowley in 1954 in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Together they raised three children in Stamford, Connecticut. Their family grew to include five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Leo and Cathy retired to Amelia Island FL, where they enjoyed golf (7 holes-in-one) and involvement in the Amelia Island Plantation community. Leo served as President of the AIPCA in 2000 and was involved in the major safety project to design, approve, fund and construct the first two roundabouts on A1A at the Amelia Island Plantation main entrances. Catherine died in 2007. Leo was then blessed to meet the second joy of his life, Kristina Stenson. They married in 2013 and had over 10 wonderful years together. Leo’s extended family grew to include Kris’ two daughters, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Leo leaves behind his spouse, Kris, of Amelia Island FL; his children, Doreen L. Weller (Dwight) of Jacksonville FL, Alayne Landers Murphy (Brian McCarthy) of Wilmington NC, and Leo A. Landers, Jr. of St Mary’s GA; grandchildren Marianne Wilson (Luke) of Santa Rosa CA, Caroline Weller (Chen Wang) of Redwood City CA, Michael Weller of Irvine CA, Tim Murphy (Krystal) of Greenwich CT, and Dan Murphy (Nichole) of Norwalk CT; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach. He will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach.
