Gemma U. Ashmead, 53, of Fernandina Beach passed away Friday, August 27, 2021 at Baptist Medical Center, Nassau.

Born and raised in the Philippines, she was a daughter of Pedro and Viloleta Umagtam.

She and her husband, John Ashmead first met in Hong Kong prior to the Chinese takeover in the late 1990’s. They maintained a friendship through phone calls and letters. She moved to Canada at the time of the succession and they married soon after.

She was an amazing and loving lady whom John cared for dearly over the course of their 25-year marriage. Gemma worked for several years in the Publix bakery in Fernandina Beach. Prior to her health declining, she and John attended Memorial United Methodist Church where she helped with family night suppers.

In addition to her husband, John she leaves behind her sister, Bren Dornier of Jacksonville as well as her parents, Pedro and Violeta Umagtam and her sisters and brother, Missy, Hilda, Rhoda, Marisol, Jaimie and Ricky, all of whom still reside in the Philippine, as well as several close friend.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Pastor Mark Charles officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.

She will be laid to rest at Bosque Bello Cemetery.
