I loved Doris and did her hair for many years. She was the finest of women and will be missed.
Doris Jeane Holland
2025-02-19
Doris Jeane Holland passed away on February 19, 2025, at age 92, in her home surrounded by family. Doris was born on January 8, 1933, to Lawrence and Gladys Tanner. Doris lived with her parents and younger sister Marie in Jacksonville, FL where she graduated from high school. Shortly thereafter, she met and married her husband Arnold in June 1952.
Doris and Arnold were married for fifty years before his passing. Together, they raised four sons and one daughter: Michael, Aaron, Bambi, John, and David. She also had two dogs in her life: Betsy and Leah. They lived in Yulee, FL, but also spent many years enjoying lake life while living in Hawthorne, FL.
Doris excelled in school, and this served her well when she worked as the bookkeeper for the construction company that she and Arnold founded. Over the years, along with their sons, they built many homes in Nassau County, including the one that she spent her final days in.
Doris enjoyed cooking and found pleasure in doing so for others- especially her sons who worked for the family construction business. She would often have lunch ready and waiting for them on a workday. No one went hungry at Doris’ house.
Doris’ favorite hobbies were gardening and fishing. During her life, she lived on both rivers and lakes. Most evenings after dinner, she could be found out on the dock with a fishing pole in hand. She enjoyed growing vegetables, flowers and satsuma citrus trees, but her favorite thing to grow was tomatoes. She always loved a good tomato sandwich.
One of Doris’ greatest joys was spending time with friends and family. Doris had fifteen grandchildren, including Rita and Bubba whom she helped raise. She had thirty-one great grandchildren, and fourteen great-great grandchildren. Doris is remembered as the person who always answered when you called, listened with an open heart and loved unconditionally.
A funeral service will be held to honor Doris Holland’s life on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 11:30.
