Billy Joe Thornton

Billy Joe Thornton, 59, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away on Thursday, October 19th 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Baptist Medical Center in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Born on October 16, 1964 in Fernandina Beach, he was the son of Lois Thompson Thornton and the late Billy Milton Thornton. He grew up in Fernandina, graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in 1982.
Billy began working with Bacardi Bottling Corporation in Jacksonville, Florida in 1983, until his retirement in 2022. Billy was blessed with three amazing, wonderful, loving children and two sweet granddaughters, with whom he enjoyed spending time with. As a teen and young adult, Billy loved playing baseball with his younger brother, Daniel. Billy was an avid member of the Eight Flags Jeep Club and enjoyed all the time he got to spend with his many friends in the club. He loved off-roading. You could see him driving his Jeep dressed as a pirate in the Shrimp Fest parade or in the “Black Pearl” all lit up in the Christmas Parade. He loved football, the Jaguars and the Gators and the Yulee Hornets! He loved tinkering in his garage with any and everything.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his Sister, Shirley Jean Woodard and his Brother, Kenneth Daniel Thornton.

Billy leaves behind his children, Laura Hickox of Callahan, Matthew Thornton of Fernandina Beach, Madison Thornton of Jacksonville; his mother, Lois Thornton of Fernandina Beach; his brother, John Thornton (Deborah) of Yulee; his sister, Marie Winkler of Fernandina Beach; Sister in law, Renee Thornton of Fernandina Beach; two beautiful granddaughters, Stella and Shelby and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 24th in the Burgess Chapel at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 23rd from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home.

He will be laid to rest at Green Pine Cemetery in Yulee, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oxley Heard Funeral home to help cover funeral expenses.
