Betty Flanagan Hopper

2023-06-27

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Betty Louise Flanagan Hopper, the adored matriarch of our large extended family. Born on May 3, 1935, in Jacksonville, Florida, Betty took her final breaths as she slept on June 27, 2023, in the serenity of community hospice in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Betty's radiant spirit, infectious laughter, and warm-hearted affection were a binding force in our large clan. Her life was a testament to the love of family and friends, a love she never hesitated to reciprocate. Born to the late Lucille and James Arte Flanagan, Betty remained a proud Jacksonville native for much of her young adult and childhood years. She later resided in Callahan, Florida, before spending the last one-third of her life amidst the tranquil settings of North Fernandina Beach.
Betty was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Grover Cleveland "Buddy" Hopper, and her cherished grandson, Jeremy Hopper. She leaves behind a loving family who will carry her memory in their hearts always, including her children, Lance Hopper (Heather), Cleve Hopper(Denise), and Jill Hopper Nelson (Curtis); her grandchildren, Calee Yoe, Lauren Hopper, Alan Hopper, Kelli Lamb, Jordan Nelson, and Tyler Nelson; seven great grandchildren and her siblings, Patricia Crider, James A. Flanagan, and William J. Flanagan.
Betty's nurturing heart did not belong solely to her immediate family. As the matriarch, she loved being surrounded by the many members of her extended family, who would gather at her home annually for Christmas and on countless other occasions. It was a joy for her to entertain her loved ones, sharing laughter and stories that will echo in their hearts forever.
Notably, the ladies of her church and close friends, including Catherine Eleazer and Marty Flanagan shared an invaluable bond with Betty. She proudly spent much of her time nurturing these relationships, as well as taking great joy and pride in her many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Betty's passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of many. Yet, we take comfort in the fact that her love has left indelible imprints on our lives. We celebrate her life, not just in death, but for the wonderful years she blessed us with her presence. As we navigate this period of grief, we will remember her for the love she gave, the joy she spread, and the life she so beautifully lived.
